🇮🇹 Castel Sant’Angelo & Ponte Sant’Angelo
Castel Sant’Angelo was originally built in the 2nd century as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum, later turned into a fortress and papal stronghold. Its round structure and layers of brick really show how many roles it has played over the centuries.
The walk across Ponte Sant’Angelo is just as impressive. The bridge is lined with ten marble angel statues, designed by Bernini and his students, each holding an object from the Passion of Christ. They give the whole bridge a very distinctive look as you cross the Tiber toward the castle.
